Notes from the debate marathon… bloodlust… nonpartisan camera humping… boredom… Resident Evil

What a day it could have been. Had the football games had any good teams in them, I might have worn my TV out. Still, the touchy-feely, teeth-baring, love-in format of the back-to-back debates were enough to keep me busy until my attention ran out of steam.

Having not watched network news for some time, I had forgotten about Charlie Gibson, but he is not only a likeable talking-head, he also performed his role as moderator incredibly well. He reminds me very much of Peter Jennings who I admired very much. He runs with an air of extreme credibility that somehow doesn’t stop him from being charmingly crude or inappropriate at times to either break the tension or call BS on a candidate without seeming biased or drawing immediate ire.

On the other hand, his little obligatory partner, WMUR’s Scott Spradling, gummed up the works firstly on what I admit is simply an aural aesthetic displeasure in changing to his voice…but also because his questions more or less were dumb social-page, tabloid crap that were written 5 minutes before he fell asleep and someone poked him and told him he had to jabber for 15 minutes.

But enough of that. Gathered from here on are running thoughts that will not tell the whole story or anything really useful, but will hopefully pop up some funny items fallen through the cracks. I will accept no responsibility for my comments should they turn out wrong or useless in the near or far future…

…Giuliani says some dumb thing like ‘…the Islamic extremist existential threat…’ which, although I’m not completely learned in Philosophy, I do not believe that makes any sense…unless we are saying simply that the threat exists…

…also on the Islamic extremist threat, Romney – ‘I read what they write. That’s how I know…’ – apparently taking the prompt to join Facebook and trading bulletins with the the Islamic extremists on his buddy list…

…Mitt Romney…at least early on…is simply Huckabee’s bitch. Eye contact. Huckabee seems beyond criticism with his recent win…a wind at his back allows him personal attacks as long as they are funny…Romney – ‘…my stance on this issue’…Huckabee – ‘…which one?’…you hear Guiliani in the background go “Hoo! Hoo!” in reaction to this particularly stinging remark by Huckabee…who sits back after each remark as calm and avuncular as Mr. Rogers…Romney coming back with concentrated anger that only serves to light his eyes in a way that screams ‘I’M NOT YOUR BITCH!’ but can only mean he is…

…Is there a handshake agreement amongst everyone else to laugh at everything Ron Paul says? He’s not talking about UFOs and crap…debate you dumb fools. But perhaps perception is good enough…’no he’s a fool’ repeated over and over will serve as a Fritos ad in the minds of the audience…perhaps a seed planted in support of his exclusion from the FOX NEWS debate…

…Gibson…spontaneously…violates his rule of not bringing outside video taped questions…with video that had to have been queued…its not like he’s just popping it in a VCR cause he thought of it…

…paraphrasing a funny screw-up, Huckabee says something to the effect of ‘We need to make certain that people are not happy, but do have the right to pursue it anyway’…

…McCain, particularly with his little half-certain turtle chuckle after he says anything concrete, seems older than Fred Thompson…his eyes glazing a minimum of at least 3cm more with each question…unbelievable…has he slipped into his own private Alzheimer’s this quickly?

…sophomoric humor…arguing over his mandates in Massachusetts…Romney eventually says so firmly, ‘Let me just tell you what kind of Man Dates I do like…’

…Huckabee is winning…he is savvy beyond what I originally thought…simply sitting in the background letting everyone else tear themselves apart…it will work tonight, but not in the long run…eventually you will have to say words…presidents must have the gift of speech…
